Amazing Grace was written by John Newton in 1772. As a younger man he had been captain of a slave ship, until the day he realized what he was doing. In 1835 an American composer named William Walker married the words to a traditional American folk song called “New Britain.” Walker published “Amazing Grace” with Newton’s words and the tune was a match made in heaven. The song has since become one of the most popular and famous hymns in the world.

was blind, but now I see!
‘Twas Grace that taught my heart to fear
and Grace my fears relieved!
How precious did that Grace appear
the hour I first believed!
Through many dangers, toils and snares
I have already come.
‘Tis Grace that brought me safe thus far
and Grace will lead me home!
German Translation:
Oh grosse Gnade, wie süß der Klang,
der eine Seele wie mich errettet!
Einst war ich verloren, nun bin ich gefunden,
war blind, aber jetzt sehe ich.
Durch Gnade lernte ich Furcht,
Und Gnade nahm sie mir;
Wie kostbar diese Gnade,
diese erste Stunde meines Glaubens!
Überwunden habe ich viele Gefahren und Mühen.
Gnade war es, die mich sicher bis hierher brachte
und Gnade ist es, die mich geleitet, bis nach Haus!
